Course Overview

Description

National & State Approved Silica Awareness Training
Regulators accross Australian states require you to provide crystalline silica training to:
  • Any worker involved in processing of a crystalline silica substance (CSS) that is high risk; or
  • Who is at risk of exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) because of that processing.
If your workers are not undertaking high risk processing, you must still provide appropriate information, instruction, training or supervision to anyone who may be exposed to RCS at the workplace.

This unit of competency is one of the recognised approved training in Nationally and in NSW through Safework NSW.

Course description
Crystalline silica (quartz) is a fundamental component of many natural and manufactured materials commonly used in the construction industry.
Prolonged inhalation of silica dust can result in severe health issues and may even be fatal. Workers handling materials that contain silica are at risk of exposure if appropriate safety measures are not implemented and followed.

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:
  1. understand the risks and long-term health impacts associated with silica dust exposure,
  2. identify workplace scenarios where silica dust exposure may occur,
  3. explain the roles and responsibilities of employers and employees in minimizing silica dust exposure,
  4. apply the hierarchy of controls to effectively eliminate or reduce workplace exposure to silica dust,
  5. evaluate and create action plans to address gaps in workplace safety that contribute to silica dust exposure.
This course is designed for individuals working in the construction, manufacturing, and engineered stone industries.
Note: The course content includes information about work health and safety regulations and enforcement specific to NSW. It also touches on obligations under national legislation. However, this course may not align with regulatory requirements in other states or territories. To ensure compliance, consult the relevant legislation applicable to your location.
